Background of the Study:
Urbanization has rapidly transformed the physical and social landscapes in Ede North Local Government, affecting traditional housing styles that once reflected indigenous architectural aesthetics and environmental adaptability. Traditional housing, characterized by the use of locally available materials and climate-responsive designs, has been central to community identity (Adesina, 2023). However, as urban sprawl accelerates, modern construction techniques and standardized designs increasingly replace indigenous architectural forms (Taiwo, 2024). This transition not only alters the visual character of communities but also disrupts cultural continuity and sustainable building practices (Folarin, 2025). The study investigates the effects of urbanization on traditional housing, exploring how rapid development impacts architectural heritage, community cohesion, and environmental sustainability. By examining historical trends alongside contemporary construction practices, the research aims to provide insights into preserving traditional housing styles amid urban growth (Adesina, 2023).

Statement of the Problem:
Urbanization in Ede North has led to the erosion of traditional housing styles, resulting in the loss of cultural identity and environmentally adaptive designs. The encroachment of modern building methods threatens the sustainability and heritage of indigenous architecture (Taiwo, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the impact of urbanization on traditional housing styles.

  2. To assess the loss of cultural and environmental benefits associated with indigenous architecture.

  3. To propose measures for preserving traditional housing in urban areas.

Research Questions:

  1. How does urbanization affect traditional housing styles?

  2. What are the cultural implications of replacing indigenous housing with modern structures?

  3. What strategies can be implemented to preserve traditional architectural forms?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Urbanization significantly diminishes traditional housing styles.

  2. The loss of indigenous housing leads to reduced cultural and environmental sustainability.

  3. Preservation programs can effectively conserve traditional architectural heritage.

Significance of the Study:
This study emphasizes the need to safeguard traditional housing styles in the face of urban expansion. Its findings will guide urban planners and cultural preservationists in integrating heritage with modern development (Folarin, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the effect of urbanization on traditional housing styles in Ede North Local Government, Osun State.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Urbanization: The process of population concentration in urban areas.

  2. Traditional Housing: Indigenous residential structures built using local methods.

  3. Architectural Heritage: Culturally significant building designs passed through generations.
